Getting to Mauritius

Fly into Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) in the south-east of the island — the only international airport. Direct flights connect from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India and Réunion. Grand Baie is in the far north, about a 1 hour 15 minute drive from the airport.

Airport → Grand Baie

We highly recommend hiring a car — it gives you the freedom to explore the island at your own pace (just remember Mauritius drives on the left). Taxis are readily available too, roughly a 60–75 minute drive.

In particular, we know a wonderful local driver, Shezad, who can arrange your transfer — and, with his network of fellow drivers, sort out taxis for the whole trip.

Before you go

Practical notes

Currency

The Mauritian rupee (MUR). Cards are widely accepted; carry a little cash for markets and taxis.

Driving

Mauritius drives on the left. Roads are good; a car gives you freedom, or transfers and taxis are easy.

Plugs & power

Mainly UK-style three-pin (type G), 230V. Bring a UK adapter — some hotels also have type C.

Entry & visa

Many nationalities receive a visa on arrival for tourism. Please check the current requirements for your passport before travelling.

Language

English and French are both widely spoken, alongside Mauritian Creole. A friendly "bonzour" goes a long way.

Time zone

Mauritius is GMT+4 all year (no daylight saving).
